DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z June 03, 2006.

Alaska/Canada:
The smoke from Siberian fires that was observed in Alaska this afternoon
has continued to move eastward into portions of western/central Canada
and beginning to thin out. Several fires in northern Saskatchewan are
producing thin plumes of smoke that are moving north to northeast.

Arkansas:
Many agricultural fires in eastern Arkansas along the Mississippi River
are producing light plumes of smoke that are heading directly south and
just crossing the northern border of Louisiana.

Wisconsin/Minnesota:
A fire in the Chequamegon National Forest of Bayfield county in northern
Wisconsin is producing a narrow dense plume of smoke that is extending
90km south. There is a fire in Carlton county of northeast Minnesota
that is producing a moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving in
a southeastern direction.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
