DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z June 13, 2006.

California:
A fire in southern Inyo County, California is producing a moderate smoke
plume that extends northward reaching just past the Nevada border.

Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas:
Several fires are producing small, mostly thin smoke plumes in Louisiana,
eastern Texas and southern Arkansas.  There is an area of possible smoke
mixed with haze in eastern Arkansas.

New Mexico, Arizona and Utah:
Several fires in New Mexico, Arizona and Utah are producing smoke.
A fire in extreme southwestern San Juan County, Utah is producing a
moderate smoke plume that extends northward.  A fire in western Navajo
County, Arizona, and several fires in Catron and Grant Counties in New
Mexico are producing moderate plumes that extend northeastward.

Alaska:
The wildfire west southwest of Fairbanks is producing moderate smoke
that extends mostly westward.

Canada:
Earlier today a few fires over northeast Alberta and northwest
Saskatchewan were producing moderate smoke plumes but the area is now
too cloud covered to observe.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
