DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z July 14, 2006

US Southwest:

The large fire north of Palm Springs CA continues to produce an area
of smoke that has moved both southwest and off the southern California
coast between Los Angeles and northern San Diego to the islands of Santa
Catalina and San Clemente and to the northeast across Las Vegas and the
southeastern tip of Nevada.

Northern US:

A few fires east of Billings Montana and near Sheridan Wyoming are
producing an extensive plume of smoke that is dense over southeastern MT
and then thins as it moves across northwestern and south central South
Dakota and then expands to cover much of eastern Nebraska and
extreme western Iowa and northeastern Kansas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
