DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z July 15, 2006

California:

The large fire north of Palm Springs CA continues to produce an area of
smoke that extends northeast across Las Vegas and the southeastern tip
of Nevada. A large band of smoke detached from the fire extends from the
southern San Joaquin valley northeast into central Nevada then east to
near Ely NV.

Northern and Central Plains:

A few fires east of Billings Montana and near Sheridan Wyoming are
producing an extensive plume of smoke that is over most of eastern Montana
and then thins as it moves across most of North Dakota and eastern South
Dakota and curves across all but northeastern Minnesota into much of
Iowa and all but northeastern Wisconsin.

There is also some remnant thin smoke from Montana over central and
eastern Nebraska and Kansas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
