DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0220Z August 1, 2006.

California/Oregon:
Residual smoke from the large wildfires in northern California located
in the Klamath/Six Rivers/Trinity National Forest is visible along the
Northern California border and into south central Oregon. To the south,
in Mendocino and Glenn counties the smoke can be seen moving to the west
and over the Pacific Coast. A thin haze covers much of southern Idaho
and southwestern Montana, which likely contains smoke from these fires.

Washington/Idaho/Montana:
Light smoke from the wildfire in northern Washington State can be seen
drifting to the east over northern Idaho, northwestern Montana and into
southern Canada.

A large area of haze stretches from New York and Massachusetts along
the eastern seaboard to Georgia. This haze is best seen out over the
Atlantic and is likely associated with the high pressure bringing heat
and humidity to much of the eastern third of the nation.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
