DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2230Z August 9, 2006.

Washington/Montana/North Dakota/Southern Canada/the Great Lakes States:
The very large wildfire located in Okanogan National Forest (Tripod
Complex) continues to spread and burn across northern Washington
and thick smoke can be seen moving north from the fire into southern
British Columbia. The fire in Glacier county of Montana has produced a
dense area plume of smoke that is moving northeast to southern Alberta
province of Canada and is combined with the smoke from Washington. The
overall smoke from this fire burning during the last few days can be seen
stretching from southeast British Columbia into southern/central sections
of Alberta/Saskatchewan/Manitoba to southern Ontario and southeastward
into North Dakota, and the states around the Great Lakes, including
Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York, and Michigan.

Oregon/Idaho/Wyoming/southwestern Montana/Utah/California:
A fire in Hood River county of Oregon is producing a moderately dense
plume of smoke, that is moving mainly northeast across the northwestern
corner of Wasco county in Oregon to Klickitat county of Washington.
Three fires in Idaho, Valley, and Custer counties of Idaho are producing
moderately dense to locally dense plumes of smoke that are fanning
out to the east. A fire in Ravalili county of Montana is producing a
moderately dense plume of smoke which is moving northeast across northern
Ravalili county to the central Granite county in Montana. Two fires in
Park and Teton counties of Wyoming are burning and producing moderately
dense to locally very dense plumes of smoke that are fanning out to the
northeast. Especially, the one in Park county is very impressive and the
smoke from this fire has extended from central Park county across Big
Horn county in Wyoming to Big Horn county in Montana. A fire in Millaro
county Utah is emitting a moderately dense plume of smoke that is swirling
along the border between Sevier and Sanpete counties in Utah. Fires
in Trinity and Tuolumne counties of California are producing thin to
moderately dense plumes of smoke that are mainly moving northeast, and
a fire in Tulare county in California is producing moderately a dense
plume of smoke moving southeast.

Texas and Florida:
A fire in Mills county in Texas is producing a moderately dense plume
of smoke that is moving north. A fire along the boundary between Marion
and Lake counties of Florida is producing a moderately dense plume of
smoke that is swirling around Putnam and Marion counties of Florida.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
