DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0150Z August 21, 2006.

Northwest US/northern Plains/the Great Lakes states/
British Columbia/Alberta/Saskatchewan:

Wildfires in northern Washington, central Idaho and northwestern
corner of Nevada are still burning this morning; however, since all
these fires are covered by dense smoke or clouds, it is difficult to
tell whether they are still producing smoke this morning. The large
area of moderately dense to locally dense plume of smoke can be seen
all over the northwestern US (including Washington, Oregon, Montana,
Idaho, and Wyoming)and southwestern Canada (including British Columbia,
Alberta, and Saskatchewan). The thin part of the massive area of smoke
covered the northern Plains (including North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa,
and part of Nebraska), and the western states around the Great Lakes
(including Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois).

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
