DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z August 29, 2006

Washington/British Columbia/Alberta:
The enormous wildfire in Okanogan National Forest continues to burn
through the evening, producing very dense smoke that is moving to the
north through central British Columbia, then moving east into central and
southern Alberta. There is also a wildfire in southeast Alberta that is
producing dense to very dense smoke that is moving to the north northeast.

Idaho/Montana:
There are wildfires located throughout all of central and northern Idaho,
but the majority are located in the counties of Valley and Clearwater. The
wildfires burning throughout Valley county are located within the Boise
National Forest where they are producing massive amounts of very dense
smoke that is moving to the northeast through central Idaho and western
Montana. The wildfires in Clearwater county are found along the Clearwater
Mountains and Clearwater National Forest. These fires are also producing
very dense smoke that is moving almost dead east into western Montana.

There are several smaller wildfires that are located in western Montana
that are contributing to the large area of smoke that is covering almost
all of western and central Montana.

Oregon:
There is an extreme amount of fires located throughout Marion and Linn
counties of northwest Oregon that were originally producing moderately
dense smoke that was moving to the north, but now are producing plumes
of very dense smoke that is moving directly to the east at a relatively
slow rate.

In Umatilla National Forest of east central Oregon there is a large
wildfire that is producing a plume of smoke producing very dense smoke
that is extending nearly 200km to the north.

In Klamath county of southwest Oregon there is a fire producing moderately
dense smoke that is fanning out to the northeast.

California:
The wildfires that are spread throughout the National Forest's in
northwest California continue to produce very dense smoke that is
extending north well into central Oregon, but is also fanning out to
the east and west.

Further south in central California there are several smaller fires that
are producing light to moderately dense plumes of smoke that are moving
to the northeast.

In southern California there is a fire that is fanning out moderately
dense smoke that is going to affect the Los Angeles metro area.

Alabama:
Several agricultural fires in western Alabama are producing light to
moderately dense smoke that is moving directly to the east.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
