DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z September 13, 2006

Pacific Northwest/Northern Rockies/Central and Northern Plains:

The large number of wildfires burning (particularly) in Idaho, Washington,
and California have resulted in a large area of smoke that stretched
from northern California across Idaho, northern Wyoming, and Montana into
the Dakotas, Nebraska, northeast Colorado and central Kansas. The smoke
was particularly dense across western Nebraska and northeast Colorado.

Manitoba and Ontario:

Fires along the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg have produced a narrow
band of dense smoke that extended into south central Ontario. Some of
this smoke was moving southeast across Lake Superior.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
