DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z September 19, 2006

California:
The large fire in Ventura county continues to emit a dense to very dense
plume of smoke that extends 275 km to the northeast, just reaching the
southwestern Nevada border.

The wildfires in northwest California that have been burning for many
weeks now, seem to have died down almost completely, but light smoke
can still be seen in visible imagery coming from that general area.

Nebraska/Kansas:
Light to moderately dense smoke can be seen moving southeast across
eastern Nebraska and Kansas. This smoke is probably the result of the
fire in southern California and has moved into this area overnight.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
