DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z September 24, 2006

California:
The persistent fire in northern California continues to produce smoke
which is drifting slowly to the north and west of the fire source. The
large wildfire burning in the Los Padres National Forest in Ventura
county is still producing smoke. In addition, an unusual long narrow
plume of smoke, maybe 30 nmi wide at most, extends from just south of
San Francisco to southeast California and then across central Arizona
into extreme west-central New Mexico.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
