DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z September 27, 2006

Northern California/Oregon and Idaho:
Numerous fires produced a large area of dense smoke that drifted to the
N and NE from northern California/southwestern Oregon to the Pacific
Ocean. Dense smoke emanated from fire clusters in N Trinity/SW Siskiyou
County in N California and central Douglas County in SW Oregon. Other
fires in Oregon produced plumes of thin smoke in central Harney, southern
Crook and western Union County.

Thin smoke extended mostly to the east from fires in Benewah, Shoshone,
N Idaho and Valley County in Idaho.

Southern California/Baja
The large fire in N Ventura County continues to cause dense smoke that
stretched eastward to southern Nevada. Thin and moderately dense smoke
also drifted to the NE from fires in NW Imperial County and Northern Baja.

Southeastern States:
Scattered fires produced plumes of thin smoke that drifted mostly
southward over the Gulf States and the Carolinas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
