DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z October 9, 2006

Northern California:
Moderately dense to locally dense smoke continues to be emitted
from significant fires in Trinity and Siskiyou Counties of northern
California. The area of smoke was moving mainly in a southwestward
direction across Humboldt County and over the eastern Pacific. A thin
to moderately dense batch of smoke was observed moving to the southwest
and offshore from a fire over southern Monterey County in south central
California. Late in the afternoon a developing moderately dense smoke
plume was noted spreading westward from a fire located relatively close
to South Lake Tahoe in El Dorado County.

Arkansas:
Rather significant moderately dense to locally dense smoke areas of
smoke were moving westward from fires in Scott and Pike Counties of
western and southwestern Arkansas.

Ohio:
A narrow smoke plume with a dark appearance on visible satellite imagery
was observed moving northeastward from a fire located very close to or
in the town of Lima in west central Ohio.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
