DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z October 25, 2006

Southern Canada/Minnesota/Northeastern North Dakota:
Yesterday, there were a tremendous number of what were believed to be
primarily agricultural fires detected across the southern portions of
Saskatchewan and Manitoba Provinces of southern Canada as well as the
eastern half of North Dakota. Early morning GOES-West visible imagery
today showed what appeared to be a region of thin haze stretching from
around Lake Manitoba southeastward across northeastern North Dakota
and northern and central Minnesota to near the Minnesota/Wisconsin
border. This area of thin haze could possibly contain some remnant smoke
from the large number of fires detected in the region yesterday.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
