DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z October 27, 2006

California:
A large fire in Riverside county of southern California is producing a
large amount of smoke that is moving west due to Santa Anna winds. The
smoke crosses southern Orange county and then fans off the coast out
around 200 miles. Over the ocean the smoke fans from just southwest
of Point Conception south to off the Mexican coast near Ensenada and
completely covers the Islands of Santa Catalina, Santa Barbara and
San Clemente.

No other smoke is detected in the morning imagery across the US and
Canada.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
