DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0240Z October 31, 2006

Oregon/Washington/Vancouver Island:
The fires all over Oregon but southeastern quarter are producing
Moderately dense to locally dense plumes of smoke moving either to the
southwest or south. Among these fires, those larger ones are mainly in
western coast counties and southern counties, including Curry, Coos,
Lane, Lincoln, Polk, Linn, Josephine, and Lake counties. Several fires
along the border of Clallam and Jefferson counties near western coast
of Washington are producing moderately dense to dense plumes of smoke
moving southwestward to the Pacific. Several fires in Orkanogan and Ferry
counties of northern Washington are producing moderately dense plumes
of smoke moving mainly to the south. A fire in Yakima county of southern
Washington is producing a moderately dense plume of southwesterly smoke.

California:
A fire along the central boundary of Lassen and Smasta counties of
northern California is producing locally dense plume of smoke moving to
the east across northern Lassen county to northern Washoe and Humboldt
counties of Nevada. A fire in Siskiyou county of norther California is
producing a moderately dense narrow plume of smoke moving to the east
across the border between Siskiyou and Modoc counties reaching central
Modoc county of California. The same fire ring as yesterday in central
California came back this evening and is producing a moderately dense
plume of smoke which has covered the central boundary of those counties,
including Butte, Colusa, Butter, Yuolo, and Yuba counties.

Arizona and Utah:
Many fires in Coconino and Yavapai counties of Arizona and Garfield
county in southern Utah are producing moderately dense to locally dense
plumes of smoke moving mainly to the east. The smoke plumes in Arizona
mainly influence Coconino, Yavapai, and Navajo counties of Arizona;
the smoke plume in Utah mainly influences Garfield and Kane counties in
southern Utah.

Southern Kansas and northern Texas:
Several agricultural fires in southern Kansas and northern Texas are
producing thin to moderately dense plumes of southward or eastward smoke.

Georgia/Alabama/Carolinas:
Many agricultural fires in these areas, especially Georgia, are producing
thin to moderately dense plumes of smoke and influence locally.

Ontario:
Several fires in southern Ontario near the Great Lakes are producing
moderately dense plumes of smoke which are moving northwesterly or
northeasterly.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
