DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z December 28, 2006

Hawaii:
A fire on the island of Maui most likely agricultural produced a light
puff of smoke moving east and dissipating within a couple of hours.

Louisiana:
A fire on Marsh Island is emitting a light to moderate plume of smoke
now moving northwest across parts of southwestern/west central Louisiana
and southeastern Texas. Earlier in the day smoke was moving towards the
southwest before veering to the west and eventually the northwest. In
satellite imagery you can see a long narrow trail of smoke moving from
the Gulf of Mexico into Louisiana and Texas. This smoke is attached to
the main moderate plume now moving northwest.

In St Mary's county a small and most likely agricultural fire is emitting
a light plume of smoke to the northwest.

Cloud cover across most of the country hindered fire and smoke detection
today.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
