DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z January 22, 2007

California/Arizona:

A fire in Monterey County generated a narrow smoke plume that extended
nearly 100 km (54 nmi) to the southwest. High winds have resulted in
blowing dust across southern California, the lower Sacramento Valley,
and southwest Arizona, especially the counties of San Diego, Imperial,
Riverside, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara in California
as well as Yuma County, Arizona. Dust was also apparent across a large
portion of northern Baja, Mexico.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
