DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z February 1, 2007

California/Oregon/Nevada:
A large number of fires were observed this evening over the Sacramento
Valley and San Joaquin Valley of central and northern California. This has
produced what was believed to be a large area of haze in the valley area.

Numerous fires were located over Oregon this evening with most of
them occurring along the coastal counties of Lincoln south to Curry. The
smoke from these fires were drifting mainly northward and northeastward.
The highest density smoke mostly influences locally.

A fire in central Esmeralda county of southwestern Nevada is producing a
moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving southward into southwestern
NYE county.

Southeastern to South-central United States:
Numerous fires were located over the region this evening with the highest
concentration being centered over the southeast from Florida to south of
North Carolina. Several smoke producing fires were detected throughout
the area with most of the smoke plumes being low density plumes which
were drifting anywhere between west and southwest.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
