DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2245Z February 8, 2007

Southeast US:
A large number of agricultural and prescribe burns were seen over the
Southeast US today stretching from the Carolinas into Florida and parts of
Alabama. Numerous smoke plumes were observed, most of which were drifting
to the east and southeast over the open waters of the Atlantic and the
northwest Gulf of Mexico. The longest plumes extended to 150 km or more.

Some of the larger plumes were seen over southern Tyrrell and central
Montgomery counties in North Carolina; Chesterfield, Williamsburg
and Georgetown counties in South Carolina; southwest Jasper, Bryan,
Wayne and western Brantley counties in Georgia and northern St John's,
southern Putnam, Columbia, Manatee, Charlotte and numerous plumes over
Wakulla, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties in Florida.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
