DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z February 10, 2007

Southeast US/Lower Mississippi Valley:
A large number of agricultural and prescribe burns were seen over the
Southeast/Lower Mississippi Valley today stretching from Virginia south
into Florida and west into parts of southern Louisiana. Numerous smoke
plumes could be seen across Florida, but the rest of the region clouds
were blocking the view or smoke was not thick enough to be picked up in
satellite imagery.

In southern Florida smoke producing plumes could be seen in the counties
of Charlotte, DeSoto, Glades and Hendry. The smoke was light and moving
east stretching about 50-60 km from the source. Northern Florida had
the largest smoke producing fires. In northern Columbia county a fire
was producing a moderate smoke plume that stretched east around 200 km
moving into the counties of Baker, Nassau, Duval and finally reaching
the Atlantic Ocean. In Suwannee county a moderate plume of smoke could
be seen moving east into southern Columbia county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
