DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z February 15, 2007

Southern Florida:
At least 4 very long smoke plumes of thin density were evident in visible
imagery this afternoon extending well to the east from fires located
along the Lee/Charlotte County border, Glades County, Okeechobee County,
and Palm Beach County. Some of the smoke extended more than 150 miles
to the east of the source.

Florida panhandle/Southern Alabama/Southern Mississippi:
Several long smoke plumes were also observed across the region this
afternoon moving southward and out over the Gulf of Mexico. The most
significant smoke producing fires over southern Calhoun and Franklin
Counties of the Florida panhandle, southern Mobile County of far
southwestern Alabama, and southern Perry and southeastern Stone Counties
of southern Mississippi were all emitting moderately dense smoke.

Texas:
Another very long smoke plume of mainly thin density was observed moving
southward from a fire located in Bastrop County of south central Texas.

Southeastern California:
A few relatively short lived fires in Imperial County of southeastern
California were producing small puffs of thin smoke which spread quickly
in a southward direction into northeastern Baja.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
