DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z February 20, 2007

Southeast/Mississippi Valley/Tennessee Valley/Mid Atlantic/Southern
Plains:
Numerous agricultural and prescribed fires burn line up across the above
region with only some producing light to moderate smoke. The heaviest
concentration of fires are across the states of South Carolina, Georgia,
Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas. Across these states hundreds of fires
are burning.

Georgia:
A fire in Jasper county is producing a light smoke plume of smoke
that stretches 40-50 km into Morgan county. A moderate plume of smoke
from a fire in Putnam county is stretching northeast into Greene and
Oglethorpe counties. A fire in Montgomery county is emitting light smoke
north NE into the counties of Toombs and Emanuel. Another fire in the
county of Appling is producing a plume of light smoke moving north NE,
but is staying within county lines. Finally a fire in Ware county is
emitting a 30-40 km long plume of light smoke north into Pierce county.
Their are numerous other fires producing smoke, but these above are the
largest of the fires in the state.

Florida:
Numerous fires across the state are producing mainly light plumes of
smoke, some moderate smoke. A fire on the Jefferson and Madison county
border is producing a moderate plume of smoke moving north into southern
Georgia. Another moderate smoke producer is in the counties of Santa Rosa
and Okaloosa. The smoke from these fires are also moving north, but
into southern Alabama. In southern Florida fires producing light smoke
are in the counties of Collier, Martin, Palm Beach, Highlands and Polk.
In central Florida light smoke from fires are in the counties of Orange
and Brevard. In northern Florida the counties of Dixie, Gulf, Liberty
and Holmes have fires emitting only light plumes of smoke.

Alabama:
Fires producing 50-100 km long lines of light to moderate smoke stretch
across the southern region of the state. A fire in Escambia county is
emitting a light plume of smoke into Butler and Conecuh counties. A fire
in Butler county is producing light smoke moving into the northern county
of Lowndes. The heaviest of the smoke producing fires is in eastern
Escambia county. This fire is emitting moderate smoke north into the
counties of Conecuh, Covington and Butler.

Mississippi:
A fire in Marion county is emitting a light plume of smoke into the
counties of Covington, Jefferson Davis, Simpson and Smith. The plume
stretches 60-70 km long. The rest of the plumes across the state are
only smaller plumes extending 20-40 km long with light smoke.

New Jersey:
A fire in Cumberland county is emitting a light plume of smoke moving
south into the Delaware Bay.

Texas:
A long narrow plume of smoke from a fire in Lamb county is stretching
130-150 km east across the state.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
