DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z March 6, 2007

Very active smoke day across much of the Southern Plains
and Southeastern states...for graphic of all smoke plumes
today...please see http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm for GIS or
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/hms.html for larger scale Hazard Mapping
System graphic. Now onto significant large fires:

South Carolina:
Nearly all of South Carolina has been covered in smoke at least at one
point today, except for the the western uplands north of Greenville-
Spartansburg.

The largest smoke plume is from a fire near Cross Keys along the
Union/Laurens county line. This plume has expanded in a fan shape form ENE
to SSE and extends just SE of Columbia and past Camden and Lancaster, SC.
The low level smoke is moving more easterly while stronger puffs have
sent moderate smoke to the mid levels and is moving SE quickly.

A fire near Noah in Jefferson county, GA has produced an area of smoke
that is currently over SC as far east as western Calhoun county and is
about 22km by 55km.
Similar thin smoke from a fire near Snelling in Barnwell county has
moved east centered over Lake Marion near Vance and is about 44km by 44km.

An abundance of agricultural or prescribed burns have occured in the
coastal counties of far Southern SC of Jasper,Beaufort, W Charleston
and Colleton counties. These fires produced a very large area of thin
smoke that has drifted eastward over Charleston to Hilton Head Island
into the coastal zones as far as 175km SE of the coast.

Georgia:
A fire near Rogers in Jenkins county has produced thin smoke that has
moved east to the SC line near Garnett/Robertville area. This plume is
about 13km wide.

A fire along the Chattahoochee river near Jamestown has produced thin
smoke that has moved SE into Terrell county and is about 14km wide.

A fire near Jefferson in Camden county and a fire near Forestview area
producing a line of thin smoke together that extends off shore about
75km. The plume is no wider than 10km and extends nearly due east.

An abundance of agricultural and prescribed burns in and around the Flint
River valley from Blainbridge to Albany have produced a very large area
of thin smoke that covers nearly all of Swern GA (west of I-75, south
of US-280) and into the Eastern panhandle of FL (east of Tallahassee).

Florida:
A fire near Newport in Wakulla county produced thin smoke that has moved
into the Gulf of Mexico as far as 60km from Apalachee Bay to 79km from
Suwannee/Hog River area.

A fire near Orange but across the river in SE Calhoun coutny has recently
increased density of smoke from thin to moderate/dense. The smoke now
extends due south to the coast around Eastpoint.

A fire near Palm Vally in St. Johns county produced a thin area of smoke
that is now completely offshore and is 51 km long,N to S, and 28km wide
and is about 75km offshore.

A fire a the northern most portion of the Indian Lagoon (N of Scottsmoor)
had a short burst of moderate/dense smoke that has begun to fanout from
SSW to SE...with the most dense smoke travelling down the intercoastal
waterway...and along Cape Canaveral.

A fire near Brookside in Indian River county produced a burst of moderate
to heavy smoke that similar to the last fire, has begun to deform into
a longer line from E to W...that covers all of Lk Okeechobee out to sea
35km E of Waveland.

Alabama:
Multiple fire in Mobile, Baldwin and S Washington counties are producing
plumes of thin smoke that nearly cover all the 3 county area and portions
of the Gulf of Mexico 130km south of Gulf Shores.

A fire near Roselle in Clay county is producing thin to moderate smoke
that extends SE 114km to Macon county. The plume is about 25km wide.

Mississippi:
A fire near Gulfport along the coast in Harrison county is producing
a plume of thin smoke that extends 170km to the tip of the Mississippi
River Delta and is about 19km wide.

A fire near Blueberry Hill in Lincoln county is producing moderately
dense smoke that extends to the MS/LA boarder due south. The plume is
about 13km wide.

A fire near Meadville in Franklin coutny is producing moderately dense
smoke that extends due south 50km to the MS/LA boarder. The plume is
about 13km wide.

Louisiana:
A fire near Kisatchie in Natchitoches parish is producing thin smoke
that is fanning out SSW to SSE and extends 50km south into Vernon parish.

A fire near Reids in Allen parish and fire near Kipling in Beauregard
parish are producing similar consistency and location smoke plumes. Both
are 50km long moving SE and are 12km wide. This has lead to the two
areas mixing slightly and the smoke nearly covers all of Allen parish.

Two small fires east of Calcasieu Lake in Cameron Parish are producing
very thin smoke that has drifted offshore into the Gulf of Mexico.
and is melding with very thin smoke that is moving SE from a fire in SE TX
near La Belle in Jefferson county. This has covered most of the coastal
offshore Gulf in thin smoke of Jefferson county and Cameron Parish.

Texas:
Quite a few fires in Goliad, Victoria, Calhoun, Jackson are producing
moderately dense smoke puffs that are expanding in nearly all directions
as winds vary greatly in direction with height. This has covered nearly
all of Goliad, SW Victoria, Calhoun and E Jackson counties. Clouds obscur
the are area SW...but additional smoke plume with similar characteristics
can be seen in Kenedy and Brooks county as well...covering both of those
counties with moderate smoke as well.

A fire near the eastern end of Matagorda Bay near Sargent in Matagorda
county is producing a very strange looking plume that no more than
10km wide but low level smoke is moving offshore 14km and rotating
from S to SSW...while low to midlevel smoke has moved N 54km to the
Brazoria/Matagorda/Fort Bend county line and is also rotating in time,
but toward the NNE...making the entire plume look like a minute hand.

A fire near Bradford in Anderson county is producing a moderately dense
smoke plume that is moving N to NE and extends to the northern portions
of Lake Palestine. The plume is no wider than 24km.

Oklahoma:
There are quite a few large/dense smoke plumes...which is most likely
due to the strengthening of Swly very dry winds into the area.

Smoke from a fire near Baum in Carter county extends NE 77km to Non in

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
