DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z March 13, 2007

Southwest

Light smoke extended 60 nmi to the southwest of a fire in Gila County
Arizona. The Orange County fire was still producing a diffuse area of
generally light smoke across extreme southwest San Bernadino County,
western Riverside County and northwest San Diego County.

Southeast

A very narrow smoke plume extended 80 nmi to the east of a fire in
McCormick County Georgia. Ag fires across southern Georgia, Alabama and
Leon County Florida have contributed to an area of haze that extended
from Leon County across southern Georgia through central Alabama.

A fire in Macon County North Carolina generated moderate to heavy smoke
at times this afternoon. A generally light smoke plume extended 110
nmi to the southeast of the fire into northwest South Carolina at sundown.

Tennessee

Light to moderate smoke stretched for 30 nmi to the east of a fire in
Van Buren County.

Missouri

Two fires—one in Taney County and the other in Reynolds
County—produced smoke plumes that extended 60 nmi to the northeast.
The Reynolds County plume had reached the Illinois border by sundown.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
