DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0232Z March 24, 2007

Southeastern U.S.
Numerous fires were analyzed over the southeastern US this evening
with a large number of those fires exhibiting smoke plumes that were
mostly drifting anywhere between northwest and northeast. Most of the
plumes were thin with localized areas of moderate density. The largest
concentration of smoke producing fires was over southwest Georgia with
perhaps the most noteworthy moderately dense smoke plume originating
from a fire located over Chattahoochee county and extending northwest to
Troup county in west central Georgia and Chambers county in east central
Alabama. Other noteworthy moderately dense smoke plumes were originating
from fires over Colbert and Franklin counties in northwest Alabama.

Montana:
A cluster of fires over central Teton/northeast Cascade/southern Chouteau
counties were producing smoke plumes that were lifting northeast this
evening. The most prominent smoke plume appeared to originate from the
fires over Cascade and Chouteau counties and extended east/northeast into
southern Blaine/southern Phillips/northern Petroleum counties. There were
numerous areas in this plume that were at least moderate density.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
