DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0155Z March 26, 2007

Numerous fires were analyzed over a large portion of the southeastern
United States and also over the middle Mississippi and Missouri Valleys
but a detailed smoke analysis was precluded due to widespread cloud
cover over the region. The most noteworthy smoke plumes analyzed were
the following:

North Carolina:
A fire over northern Dare county earlier produced a very large smoke
plume that rapidly moved off to the southwest over Pamlico Sound and
offshore Cape Lookout and to very near the Cape Fear area. For a period
this afternoon the plume featured a large area of moderately dense smoke
but towards sunset the plume appeared to be thinning.

Florida:
A fairly large fire rapidly developed over southeastern Polk county late
this afternoon and emitted a lengthy smoke plume that extended towards
the southern Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg area. Although the plume was
relatively narrow, there was a 10 km wide area of moderate smoke that
extended from the point source into the St. Petersburg area.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
