DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0240Z April 30, 2007

Georgia, Florida, Bahamas and Atlantic Ocean:
Two intense fire areas in Atkinson and Ware counties of southeastern
Georgia are producing very dense smoke that extends toward the southeast
and the denset portion of the smoke has covered southeastern corner of
Georgia and northeastern corner of Florda. A thin to moderately dense
plume of smoke from the residual smoke of the two fires has covered
the northern half of Florida except for the panhandle. A portion of
moderately dense plume of smoke has extended from central to south of
eastern Florida. A large area of moderately dense plume of smoke has
extended to the Atlantic with the smoke and covered Bahamas area. Clinch,
Charlton, Nassau, Atkinson, Baker, Camden, Clay, Dual, ST Johns, and
Ware counties in Georgia and Florida have been influenced. Several fires
in Grand Bahama and Great Abaco are producing thin plumes of smoke that
are mainly moving to the south. A fire in Lee county of southern Florida
is producing a moderately dense to locally dense plume of smoke that
is moving southeasterly then south across the county border with clay
county and has covered northern Clay county of Florida.

Kansas:
A fire in northwestern corner of Barber county in southern Kansas is
producing a thin to moderately dense plume of smoke that is swirling to
the norhteast and reached central Kansas.

Northern Minnesota and Southern Manitoba:
Several fires in Beltrami and Marshall counties of northern Minnesota
are producing moderately dense to locally dense plumes of smoke that
are moving to the south. A fire in southern Manitoba of Canada near
US-Canada border is producing a dense plume of smoke that is also moving
to the south. The smoke from all these fires has covered Beltrami, Woods,
Roslau, and northern Hubbard counties of northern Minnesota.

Oregon:
The big fire in Curry county yesterday started to burn this morning and
has produced a moderately dense to locally dense plume of smoke that is
moving northeasterly about 210km.

Cuba:
A bunch of fires along the southern coast of Cuba are producing thin
to moderately dense plumes of smoke that are moving southerly into
the Atlantic.

Mexico:
A lot of fires in central Mexico are producing thin to moderately dense
plumes of smoke that are moving to the norhteast.

Gulf of Mexico:
The western and especially southwestern Gulf have a mix of haze and
light to moderate smoke which becomes more noticable closer to land.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
