DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z May 01, 2007

Georgia, Florida, Bahamas/Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean:
Very large fires in Atkinson and Ware counties located in southern
Georgia are producing enormous amounts of smoke moving to the south. The
majority of the smoke is being produced by the fire in Atkinson county;
The smoke is moving to the south over northern Florida and is spreading
to the east across the Bahamas and further east into the Atlantic Ocean
and west into the Gulf of Mexico. The most dense smoke is found in
southern Georgia, northern Floria and just north of the Bahama Islands.
However, moderately dense smoke is spreading throughout the rest of
Florida, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and into the central portions of the
Atlantic Ocean. Lighter smoke is beginning to spread into the central
Gulf of Mexico and farther north in the Atlantic Ocean along the South
Carolina coast and then farther eastward.

Louisiana/Texas/Mississippi:
In central Louisiana fires in the counties of Claiborne and Jefferson
counties are producing moderately dense to thick smoke moving north
into the north central part of the state. The smoke is moving into the
counties of Morehouse, Lincoln, Jackson, Win, La Salle, Caldwell, Grant,
Rapides, Richland and Franklin. Smaller fires with only light smoke
are also burning across the region in eastern Texas and southern/central
parts of Louisiana and Mississippi.

Alabama/Georgia:
A fire in central Baldwin county is producing a light plume of smoke
moving south SW into southern Mobile county and into the Gulf of Mexico.

On the border of Muscogee county Georgia and Russell county Alabama a
fire is emitting a light to moderately dense plume of smoke moving south
along the two state borders.

Florida Panhandle:
A fire in Okaloosa county is emitting a narrow plume of light smoke that
stretches 100-125 km into the Gulf of Mexico.

Kentucky:
In Edmonsan and Hart counties a fire is emitting an area of moderately
dense smoke moving east into Taylor, Green, Adair, and Casey counties.
Small light smoke producing fires are also burning across the state.

Oregon:
In central Klamath county a fire is emitting moderately dense smoke
northeast, but staying within county borders. A fire on the Klamath/Lake
county border is producing a moderate smoke plume moving northeast,
but staying within county borders although last visible images of the
day showed it nearing Harney county.
Montana:
A fire in northeast Sanders county near the Idaho border is producing
a moderately dense smoke plume stretching northeast into Lincoln county.
A fire burning in Lincoln county is emitting moderately dense smoke
moving northeast into extreme southeast British Columbia.

Northern California:
A fire in eastern Shasta county is emitting moderately dense smoke
stretching east NE into northwest Lassen and southern Modoc county.
In Tehama county (Lassen National Forest) a fire is producing light
smoke northeast into northwest Plumas and southeast Shasta counties.
A fire in Placer county (Eldorado National Forest) is producing light
smoke moving into northeast Nevada and southern Sierra county.

Nevada:
In Humboldt county a fire in the Santa Rosa mountains is producing light
smoke northeast, but staying within county borders.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
