DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z May 08, 2007

Georgia, Florida, and Gulf of Mexico:
Due to very strong northerly winds on the western side of the approaching
non-tropical low off the GA coast...smoke from all the major fires across
GA and FL have consolidated into a much larger plume of very dense to
moderately dense smoke. Currently the most active fires producing
convectively dense smoke include in GA: The Big Turnaround Complex
(mainly S Ware county and W Charlton) and in FL: a very large fire SE of
Starke in SE Branford county, a large fire in SE De Soto county, and the
HP fire in the swamps between Alligator Alley and US41 in Collier county.

Together the dense smoke covers all of the Western half of peninsular FL
(ie all west of the Kissimmee and St. John's rivers, though south of Lake
Okechobee, the dense smoke now is moving due east along the SW periphery
of the cylcone into Broward, Miami-Dade counties and all the FL. Keys.

Except for a very small area of no smoke around 26N85W... the entire
Southern and Southeastern Gulf of Mexico, including the Florida Straights
to Andros islands are covered with moderate to dense smoke. The western
portion extends between 24N and 25N west to 90.5W back to 88W. There the
area is bound by 25N88W to 27.5N85W to Ft. Myers to the north and 25N88W
to Havana, Cuba to 23N80W to Andros back to Key Largo.

An additional plume of thin to moderate smoke from the Roundabout Swamp
Fire in Atkinson county that extends SSW to Cedar Key or around 210km
where is begins to meld with the larger more dense plume from the Big
Turnaround Fire.

Minnesota/Ontario:
A large fire in the Boundarywaters near Saganaga Lake in far NW Cook
county is producing a fan of dense smoke that extends along the US/CN
boarder to Isle Royale and SSW to around Tofte or Schroeder... in the
middle of the fan, the smoke exends into Lake Superior about 40km.

N Idaho/Montana:
Multiple fires are producing thin to moderately dense smoke that extends
to the NW...below are the locations and demensions of the plumes:
The plume from the fire near Talc in Sanders county, MT extends 112km
to the Swan range in C Flathead, MT county.
The plume from the fire near Spring Gulch in Mineral county, MT extends
50km to E Sanders county, MT near Camas Prairie or Perma.
The plume from the fire near Bryson in NW Mineral county, MT extends 50km
into the plume from the Talc fire near the Sanders/Flathead county line.
The plume from the fire near Bogle in Shoshone county, ID extends 50km
NW into the aforementioned plume in Sanders county, MT.
A plume from a fire near Clarkia in far SW Shoshone county, ID extends
56km to just NW of Bogle, ID.

Oregon:
A fire near Sumner in N Coos and Bancroft in S Coos county are producing
thin smoke that is moving SW until the spine of the coastal range blocks
it and it turns south along the spine into N Curry county.

S California:
A fire near Glendale in Los Angeles county is producing a plume of
moderately dense smoke that extends from SW to NE...where the SW moving
smoke is low level and extends across southern LA to Torrence and out
acors the Santa Monica Bay to just north of Santa Catalina island.
The upper level flow is also pulling the smoke toward the E and NE
along the spine of the San Gabriels (along I-210/I-10) to around Azusa
(and NE into the hills).

A fire on the NW portions of Camp Pendelton produced thin smoke that
moved due west into to Santa Catalina, but is too thin to see right now.
However, due to the low sunangle with Goes-East a line of thin smoke
can be seen moving over the Santa Ana Mtns. past I-15 and I-215.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
