DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0235Z May 10, 2007

Georgia, Florida, Cuba, and Gulf of Mexico:
Seen from the last visible imagery today, the main portion of the thick
smoke produced by the long time fires in Georgia, Florida has been brought
out to the Atlantic and tht Gulf of Mexico. A portion has reached western
Cuba. Several fires in Lee, Charlotte, and Collier counties in the west
of southern Florida are producing moderately dense to locally dense plumes
of smoke that are moving easterly to the central of southern Florida. The
fires in Atkinson county of Georgia and along the Georgia-Florida state
boundary at Ware county of Georgia are still burning and producing smoke;
however, we can't tell how the smoke is due to the thick clouds brought
by the subtropical system. A fire in the coast of Bay county of Florida
Panhandle is producing a thin plume of smoke that is moving southeward
into the Gulf of Mexico. A fire in western Chattahoochee county near state
border with Mississippi is producing a moderately dense to locally dense
plume of smoke that is moving to the south southwest across Russell and
Barbour counties of Mississippi into central Henry county of Mississippi.

Minnesota/Wisconsin/Ontario/Manitoba:
A large fire in the Boundary Waters near Saganaga Lake in far NW Cook
county continues to produce an area of moderately dense to locally dense
smoke which has fanned out to the east and has reached Lake Ontario. The
residual smoke from yesterday and this morning has covered the areas
near the southwestern end of Lake Ontario. A Fire in southern Ontario
of Canada is producing a moderately dense to locally dense plume of
smoke that is moving easterly about 45 miles. A bunch fires in Manitoba
of Canada near southern Lake Manitoba are producing thin to moderately
dense plumes of smoke that are moving northeastward. Many fires in this
area are producing thin plumes of smoke.

Arizona:
A fire in central Coconino county of Arizona near Grand Canyon National
Park is producing a moderately dense to locally dense plumes of smoke
that is moving to the south southeast and reaching the Coconino-Navajo
county doundary.

California:
A fire in western Shasta county of northern California is producing
a thin to moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving to the north
across Modoc county into Oregon. A fire in northwestern corner of San
Diego county in southern California is producing a moderately dense plume
of smoke that is moving to the north and has covered the northwestern
corner of San Diego county.

Oregon:
A fire in northwestern Polk county produced a puff of thick smoke that
crossed northern Lincoln county into the Pacific.

Washington, Idaho, and Montana:
A lot of fires in the north of Washington, Idaho, and Montana are
producing thin plumes of smoke that are mainly moving to the northeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
