DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z May 23, 2007

Southeast to Ohio River Valley:
Smoke from the Bugaboo and Turnaround fires in S GA continue this morning
with thin to moderate emissions from the fires at this time between
the fires and Valdosta,GA. Midlevel smoke from last night to this
morning is in the shape of a 'C' centered along a line from Valdosta,GA
to Blakely, GA to Montgomery, AL where the density picks up to moderate
levels and continues NW to Tuscaloosa, AL to the TN/MS/AL state line,
to Clarksville, TN where it thins out to thin density again to around
Louisville, KY to Cincinnati, OH. In general the line is moving NE though
the southern portion of the line is moving westward and the northern
end is moving northward.

SE Ontario/Great Lakes:
Smoke from an unknown source (though possibly from GA/FL fire emissions
earlier this week) have consolidated into a more dense area of moderate
smoke. This is mainly due to the smoke being trapped near the center
of the upperlevel ridge/high pressure area...where it is sprialling
inward clockwise centered over southern Lake Huron. This smoke can be
seen covering all of SE Ontario (SE of Lake Nipissing with very little
moving across the Quebec line. Also covers much of upstate NY, N PA
(north of 41N), NE OH, including the Cleveland area, and extreme E lower
MI (Detroit to Flint line and east).

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
