DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z June 2, 2007

Eastern U.S.:
Light smoke from the ongoing wildfires in southeast Georgia continue to
produce lingering smoke that stretches from Alabama/northwest Georgia
north into central/eastern Tennessee and part of southern/central
Ohio. The smoke then moves eastward into western West Virginia and into
Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and into the Atlantic Ocean.
Smoke cannot be seen near the location of the fire or across parts
of southern Georgia and Florida due to the large area of cloudiness
associated with tropical storm Barry.

North Carolina/Virginia:
A fire on the border of Warren/Halifax counties in North Carolina is
producing a light plume of smoke moving north into southern Virginia.
The counties seeing smoke in Virginia are Brunswick, Greensville,
Dinwiddie and Sussex.

Utah:
A fire on the border of Beaver and Iron counties is producing an area
of thick smoke stretching south into eastern Irons and western Garfield.
Moderately dense smoke extends into Kane county and nearing the Arizona
border. A small fire in Garfield county is emitting light smoke into
Kane.

Oregon:
A fire on the border of Lane and Linn counties is emitting moderately
dense smoke moving north into Deschutes and Jefferson counties.

Idaho/Montana:
A fire in Boundary county Idaho is emitting a light plume of smoke moving
east NE into southeastern British Columbia. In Flathead county Montana
a fire is emitting a light plume of smoke moving east, but staying within
county borders.

Alberta/Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Northwest Territories:
Wildfires burning in northeast Alberta in the Wood Buffalo National Park
just west of Lake Athabasca is producing an area of moderately dense
smoke moving east across the Alberta and nearing Saskatchewan. The full
extent of smoke cannot be seen due to clouds in the area.

A large area of light to moderately dense smoke stretches across parts of
eastern Alberta and is moving east into northern/central Saskatchewan and
into west central Manitoba. The pockets of moderately dense smoke are
located in mid central Alberta and east into west central Saskatchewan
and another pocket southwest of Reindeer Lake.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
