DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z June 6, 2007

Canada and the Great Lakes:
Several fires in northern Alberta west of Lake Athabasca are producing
moderately dense plumes of smoke that are moving southwestward then
westward and has covered almoast 2/3 of the northern Alberta. Several
fires west Reindeer Lake in northern Saskathwan are producing narrow and
thin to moderately dense plumes of smoke that are moving southwesterly
then westerly and almost reach the west border. A fire northeast of Lake
Mannitoba is producing a thin and narrow plume of smoke that is moving to
the south then east. A belt area of thin smoke stretched from central
Alberta to central Manitoba even further eastward can be see in satellite
imagery this morning; however, due to thick weather clouds it cannot
tell how far south it extended. Moreover, another belt area with thin
to moderately dense smoke stretched from central of southern Ontario to
the Great Lakes is observed. It is believed that the smoke is from the
residual smoke of the northern Canada fires.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
