DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z June 6, 2007

Lower Mississippi Valley:
A good portion of the massive amount of agricultural fires located in the
Lower Mississippi Valley are producing quick (1-2 hour) puffs of light
to moderately dense smoke that traveled a fair distance to the north.
The majority of the agricultural fires producing smoke are found in
eastern Arkansas and northwestern Mississippi.

Arizona:
A large fire in Navajo County is producing moderately dense smoke that is
narrow, but lengthy, stretching to the east across the New Mexico/Arizona
state line.

Canada:
In the northeastern part of Yukon Territory, there was a large fire that
flared up late in the evening that is now producing very dense smoke
that is spreading out to the north northeast.

Very large fires in northern Alberta and central Alberta have been
producing very dense smoke throughout the entire day that was originally
moving to the west southwest, but late in the evening began moving
directly to the south.

In Saskatchewan large fires northeast of Lake Athabasca and in central
Saskatchewan are producing moderately dense to very dense smoke that is
moving south southeast.

Light smoke that has strayed from the major plumes is covering the
majority of northeastern British Columbia, central/northern Alberta and
central Saskatchewan.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
