DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z June 8, 2007

Arizona:
Fires in central and eastern Arizona are producing light plumes of smoke
that are extending to the northeast and to the east. Light smoke has
crossed the border into western New Mexico.

California:
A fire on the Pacific Coast of Monterey county produced a quick puff of
moderately dense smoke that moved to the southwest over the ocean.

A small fire in central California is producing a locally dense plume
of smoke.

Lower Mississippi Valley:
The enormous amounts of agricultural fires continue to burn throughout
the Lower Mississippi Valley continue to burn today, but it is difficult
to tell whether or not these are producing smoke due to the cloud cover;
however there is a light area of haze over the area, so it may be a
mixture of both clouds and smoke.

Canada:
Large fires in northern Alberta, just west of Lake Athabasca, are
producing large amounts of dense smoke that is moving to the southeast
and into western/central Saskatchewan. This smoke is covering most of
eastern Alberta and western Saskatchewan.

Earlier in the day, light residual smoke could be seen moving to the west
across northwest Northwest Territory and northern Yukon Territory. This
smoke is from the large fire that burned late into last night in northern
Yukon Territory.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
