DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z June 17, 2007

Alaska:
In northeastern Alaska there is an area of haze/possible smoke from
fires in northern China.

Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Alberta:
Fires that were burning in north central Alberta have created
a moderately dense cloud of smoke that has moved east from Alberta,
across Sasakatchewan, over Lake Reindeer and into central Manitoba.

Quebec:
Not much smoke can be seen in central Quebec due to thick cloud cover,
but in far eastern Quebec there are several large fires producing dense
to very dense plumes of smoke that are moving to the east.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
