DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z June 18, 2007

Quebec:
Numerous fires are already being seen across parts of central Quebec in
GOES East morning/early afternoon imagery. The fires are producing light
to moderately dense plumes of smoke across the province. A majority of
the plumes are heading in an easterly direction. Some smoke is close
to being classified as thick.

Alberta/Saskatchewan:
The Complex of fires in Wood Buffalo National Park just west of Lake
Athabasca continue to output moderately dense to thick smoke moving
southeast across northeast Alberta and crossing the border into northwest
Saskatchewan. Smoke in central Saskatchewan can be considered light in
density and most likely from yesterday.

California:
A fire on the border of Kings/Fresno county is emitting a light to
moderately dense smoke plume. The smoke is moving south across western
Kings county.

Northwest Territories:
A fire along the Mackenzie River (near 65.3N 127.5W) just west of Great
Bear Lake is producing a moderately dense plume of smoke moving southeast.
Cloud cover is blocking the full view of smoke.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
