DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z June 20, 2007

US East Coast:
A large area of smoke/haze, much of it moderately dense, can be seen
stretching from the coastline of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland,
Delaware and southern New Jersey to nearly 500 NMI into the Atlantic
Ocean. This mix of haze and smoke is likely the result of the air mass
over the mid Atlantic states, which is conducive for haze, and residual
smoke from the past several days.

Quebec:
A large number of fires continue to rage over central Quebec. Smoke
detection was inhibited somewhat by an extensive area of clouds spreading
over the region. However, it was able to be determined that most of
the smoke was moving to the north and northeast into northern Quebec
and Labrador ahead of the weather system. Through the morning and early
afternoon, some smoke was seen drifting to the southeast across portions
of Maine and into the Atlantic.

Yukon Territory/Northwest Territory:
Several fires over the southern Yukon were producing moderately dense to
dense smoke that was moving south and then southwest into the northern
Gulf of Alaska. A large fire west of Great Bear Lake was producing a
dense plume of smoke that was moving south and reached the southern
border of the territory.

Alaska:
A fire in east central Alaska near Circle Hot Springs was producing
a dense smoke plume that was moving to the southwest reaching the
Alaska Range. Another fire along the Alaska/Yukon border was pumping
out dense smoke that was also drifting to the southwest across the
Wrangell Mountains.

Alberta/Saskatchewan/North Central Plains:
Extensive clouds make detection of smoke around the fire west of Lake
Athabasca difficult this evening although some glimpes indicate that it
is moving south. Residual smoke from these fires was seen near sunset
stretching across eastern North Dakota, Minnesota, northern Iowa and
into Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

Colorado/Utah/New Mexico:
A fire in eastern Garfield county Colorado near Glenwod Springs is
producing a dense plume of smoke that extends to the east, crossing
the Rockies just south of Denver. A fire in eastern Juab county Utah is
generating a light plume of smoke extending to the northeast. A fire in
Sierra county New Mexico west of Truth or Consequences in the Black Range
had a small plume exteding to the west reaching into eastern Grant county.

California:
A fire in southern Tulare county near Johnsondale in the Sequoia National
Forest is producing an area of light smoke that is genrally drifting to
the north.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
