DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1430Z June 27, 2007

South Dakota/Wyoming:
Light to moderately dense residual smoke from large fires yesterday in
western Wyoming and southwest South Dakota can be seen moving over most
of western South Dakota and northeast Wyoming.

Northwest Territory:
The large fires west of Great Bear Lake continue to produce massive
amounts of very dense smoke. The most dense smoke is concentrated
in western Northwest Territory, but moderately dense smoke can be
seen extended from Great Bear Lake to the southeast, all the way into
central Manitoba. There is also light to moderately dense smoke seen
in southeast Alaska.

Also adding to this massive area of smoke are the large fires in northern
Alberta. They continue to produce large amounts of very dense smoke that
is moving to the north where it combines with the smoke from the fires
of the Northwest Territory.

Eastern United States:
A large area of Haze can be seen moving off the Atlantic Coast and
out over the Atlantic Ocean. This area stretches as far north as Nova
Scotia/New Brunswick and as far south as North Carolina.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
