DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z June 30, 2007

Wyoming/Utah/Western Plains:
In addition to the Mercer, Madison Arm, Rabbit Creek, Horse Creek and
Citadel fires, heavy dense smoke also extended between 130 and 150 mi
to the northeast of blazes in Duchesne and Sanpete counties in Utah.
Residual light smoke from these fires...discernible only with the low
sun angle...covered the Western Plains from South Dakota to the Texas
Panhandle.

Michigan:
A fire in the Upper Peninsula county of Schoolcraft generated a light
plume of smoke that extended 90 mi to the southeast while a smaller plume
was noted emanating from a blaze in the northeast corner of neighboring
Delta County.

Alaska:
Although clouds were a hindrance some moderate to dense smoke was detected
moving northwest from the Su River, West Crazy WFU and Woodchopper 2
WFU complexes. Dense smoke identified earlier in the afternoon was also
moving over southeastern portions of the state from wildfires in western
Yukon Territory near the Alaskan border.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
