DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z June 30, 2007

Northcentral U.S.:
A mixture of haze and mostly light smoke cover much of North Dakota,
South Dakota, northern Nebraska, southern and eastern Wyoming, eastern
Colorado and most of Minnesota. The smoke is believed to be from previous
days fires in the western U.S. and Canada. The smoke is densest in
southeastern Wyoming from yesterday and last nights fires in northern
and northeastern Utah. Smoke is drifting toward the east or southeast.

Alaska, Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories:
Smoke detection is hindered by clouds but it appears that there is
moderate smoke in the area of Great Slave Lake possibly extending as
far southeastward as the Saskatchewan border and as far northward as
the Beaufort Sea. There is also light smoke in east central Alaska.
The Yukon Territory is almost completely cloud-covered preventing smoke
detection.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
