DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z July 1, 2007

Arizona and New Mexico:
A fire in northwestern Greenlee County, Arizona is producing a plume of
moderate to dense smoke that extends toward the south and southwest.
A fire in nearby Catron County, New Mexico is producing a moderate
smoke plume that extends southward.

Wyoming, Montana and Colorado:
An area of light to moderate smoke that currently extends from
southeastern Montana into eastern Wyoming and then into central Colorado
is continuing to move eastward. The smoke has almost reached South
Dakota and Nebraska. The smoke probably originated from yesterday's
fires in Utah and Wyoming.

Alaska and Northwestern Canada:
An area of moderate smoke covers much of northwestern Alaska (although
not near the coast) and extends through the northern Yukon Territory
and into the Northern Territories. It remains north of the Great Bear
Lake but extends eastward almost to the Hudson Bay. Yesterdays fire
near Fairbanks and the fires in the Northwest Territories presumably
contributed to this smoke.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
