DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z July 5, 2007

Alaska:
Wildfires in central Alaska have produced a quasi-stationary area of
moderate smoke in central and south central Yukon-Koyukuk.

Northwest Territories:
A mixture of haze and light to moderate smoke from previous days fires
cover much of the area north of Great Bear Lake. The smoke presumably
originated from fires in central Alaska and in the Northwest Territories.

California:
A fire in central Santa Barbara County is producing light smoke that is
moving toward the east northeast. The smoke seems to be spreading but
becoming thinner.

Utah:
A fire near the border of Emery and Sanpete Counties is producing a
small smoke plume that extends toward the north northwest.

Arizona and New Mexico:
Light to moderate smoke covers much of northern Arizona and some of
northwestern and north central New Mexico. The smoke came from the
wildfires in the Apache National forest in east central Arizona and the
Gila National Forest in west central New Mexico.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
