DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z July 10, 2007

Western United States:
A large area of moderately dense and dense smoke from numerous wildfires
burning across the Western U.S. was observed this morning from northern
California/southern Oregon through the Central Plateau Region to the
Southern Rockies. The most dense smoke was caused by the fires in northern
California, southern Oregon and northern Nevada.

Alaska/Northwest Territories:
Numerous fires scattered along much of the length of the Yukon Valley
and northern Alaska continued to cause thin to moderately dense
smoke. Residual smoke also extended from central Northwest Territories
to northern Saskatchewan.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
