DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1550Z July 12, 2007

Manitoba, Canada/North Dakota and Minnesota, US:
The big fire north of Lake Winnipeg in central Manitoba is still burning
this morning and is producing a locally dense plume of smoke that is
moving southeasterly. The residual smoke with moderately density formed
a belt area and has spread out from the fire all the way south across
western Manitoba and northeastern corner of North Dakota to central
Minnesota, US.

Alaska:
The residual thin smoke has now covered the area from north of Great
Bear Lake all the way west to northern Alaska.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
