DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200 July 14, 2007

Alberta/Northwest Territories/Saskatchewan:
The fires just south of western Great Slave Lake and east of Lake
Athabasca in northern Alberta are producing locally dense plumes of
smoke that are mainly moving to the south southeast. The fires east of
Great Slave Lake in southern Northwest Territories are producing locally
dense plumes of smoke that are moving southward. The densest portion of
the smoke are influencing northeastern corner of Alberta and southern
Northwest Territories and a large area of thin smoke from the residual
smoke of these fires can be seen in satellite imagery this evening due
to low sun angle view, which has covered northern half of Alberta, 2/3
north of Saskatchewan. Some suspicious smoke is even seen over Manitoba.

Washington/Oregon/Idaho:
The large fires in northern Harney county of Oregon are producing locally
very dense plumes of smoke that are moving northerly and approaching
WA-OR state boundary. Several fires in the Benton-Grant-Franklin three
counties intersection are producing moderately dense to locally dense
plumes of smoke that are moving northward and has covered all the Grant
county. A fire in west of central Owyhee county of Idaho is producing
a locally dense plume of smoke that is moving northerly and has covered
northwestern corner of the county.

California:
The big fires in central Santa Barbara are producing locally dense
plumes of smoke that are firstly swirling around then moving northward
and has covered almost all of Santa Barbara county, western Kern county
and eastern San Luis Obispo county. A fire in Tulare county is producing
a thin to moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving westward.

Arizona:
A fire in southern Coconico county is producing a thin to moderately
dense plume of smoke that is moving easterly.

Texas:
A fire in central Hansford county of northern Texas is producing
a moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving southerly to the
Hansford-Huntchinson county border.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
