DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z July 19, 2007

California:
A fire in Santa Barbara county (Sierra Madre Mountains) is producing an
area of moderately dense to dense smoke moving northeast. Dense smoke is
moving into southern San Luis Obispo, central Kern counties and moderately
dense smoke into southern Tulare. Smoke is fanning southwest into parts
of central/southern Santa Barbara county.

Nevada/Idaho/Oregon/Washington:
Numerous large wildfires are continuing to grow and are producing
moderately dense to thick smoke across a large area of the western
US. These wildfires are located in the counties of Lander, Eureka,
White Pines, Elko, Humboldt and Pershing counties in Nevada. In Idaho
wildfires are located in Twin Falls, Owyhee, Boise, Elmore, Valley, Idaho
and Nez Perce. In Oregon the county of Wallowa. These wildfires are
emitting a large area of smoke pushing north into central/northern Nevada,
eastern Oregon, most of Idaho and western Montana. Residual smoke from
the numerous wildfires can be seen stretching all the way into the central
US and nearing the Mississippi Valley. Moderately dense to dense smoke
is seen across a large part of Wyoming with lighter smoke in western
and southern Nebraska, eastern Colorado, most of Kansas and Oklahoma,
the Texas Panhandle, eastern New Mexico, southern/central Missouri,
and northwest Arkansas.

Utah:
A large wildfire in the counties of Washington and Kane (Zion National
Park) is emitting an area of moderately dense to dense smoke north
into eastern Beaver, Iron, and southern Sevier, western Garfield and
Millard counties. In western Iron county (The Needle Ranges) a wildfire
is producing an area of moderately dense smoke north into Beaver county
with some smoke reaching into far eastern counties of southeast Nevada.

Northwest Territories/Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Ontario/Northern US
Large wildfires north of Lake Winnipeg and east/southeast of Reindeer
Lake are emitting areas of dense to very dense smoke southwest across
parts of northern/central Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Also, wildfires
are burning in northern Saskatchewan and are producing moderately dense
smoke moving northwest across the province and into southern sections
of the Northwest Territories.
Large wildfires burning east of Great Slave Lake are producing an area of
moderately dense to dense smoke moving northwest across the territories.
Residual smoke from the numerous wildfires burning across Canada and the
US can be seen stretching from the Northwest Territories into parts of
northern/central Saskatchewan. This narrow band of smoke links up with
a large area of residual smoke seen moving southeastward from eastern
Saskatchewan, central/southern Manitoba and Ontario and into the US.
Smoke in the US extends across North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin,
Michigan and the Great Lakes.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
