DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0212Z July 20, 2007

Alaska:
A fire in Yukon-Koyukuk county is producing a moderately dense plume of
smoke that is swirling around.

Manitoba:
A lot of large fires ranging from northern Manitoba to just north of
Lake Winnipeg are burning and producing very very dense plumes of smoke
that are mainly moving eastward and has covered almost northern half of
Manitoba. A swath of moderately dense plume has covered northern half
of Lake Winnipeg.

Utah/Nevada/Idaho/Oregon/Washington/Montana/Alberta/Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Dakotas:
The large amount of very large fires in northwestern US, especially
those in Elko county of northern Nevada and Owyhee and Twin Falls
counties in southern Idaho, eastern Juab county of central Utah, Iron,
Washington, and Kane counties of southern Utah are burning crazy and
producing unbelievable dense plumes of smoke which are mainly moving
northward. The most dense portions of these smokes are influencing western
half of Utah, northeastern Nevada, all the Idaho, western Montana. The
residual smoke from this morning's burning has moved northward and mixed
with the smoke from the large fires in Manitoba and formed a large area
of thin to moderately dense even locally dense smoke which covered the
areas including northwestern US, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and manitoba of
Canada, and Dakotas of US.

California:
The fire in Santa Barbara is still producing a moderately dense to locally
dense plume of smoke that is moving northward across southeastern San
Luis Obispo county into western Kern county.

Texas:
Several fires in Parmer and Castro counties of Texas Panhandle are
producing thin to moderately dense plumes of smoke that are moving
northerly into Deaf Smith, Potter, and Randall counties.

Arkansas:
A fire in northern Grant county of Arkansas is producing a northeasterly
thin plume of smoke.

South Carolina:
A fire in eastern Lee county is producing a thin plume of smoke that is
moving northeasterly into northern Darlington county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
