DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z July 24, 2007

Inter-mountains/Northern Rockies/Northern and Central Plains /Southern
and Central Alberta/Saskatchewan/Manitoba:
Numerous wildfires in northeast Nevada/northwest Utah border, mid sections
of Idaho, The Hells Canyon National Park (Idaho/Oregon border region) and
western Montana are producing an area of moderately dense to dense smoke
moving northeast across the northern US and southern Canada. Smoke can be
seen now moving into parts of central Saskatchewan/Manitoba and parts of
the northern/central Plains. Light smoke extends across southern Montana,
Wyoming and western South Dakota and Nebraska. Cloud cover across the
Idaho/Montana/Oregon/Utah region is blocking the full view of smoke.

A fire in southern Morrow county (Umatilla National Forest) is producing a
narrow plume of moderately dense to dense smoke moving north and nearing
the Washington state border and also moving south SE.

Upper Great Lakes/Ohio Valley/Mid Mississippi Valley:
Residual smoke from fires in the western US and Canada have produced
a strip of light smoke that stretches from just north of Michigan south
SW to northern Arkansas.

Northwest Territory/Northeast Alberta/Northern and Central
Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Ontario/Quebec/Newfoundland/Labrador
The very large and numerous wildfires across
Alberta/Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Northwest Territories are producing very
heavy smoke moving east and stretches as far as the Atlantic Ocean. Smoke
becomes moderately dense when reaching Ontario/Quebec and light once
reaching far eastern Canada. Over the last few days the fires have
grown in size and number. The smoke from the source of the fires is
extremely thick and extends quite far before becoming moderate in density.

Alaska/Yukon/Northwest Territory:
Numerous wildfires are burning across this region, but only a few are
producing smoke. Although cloud cover is most likely blocking the view
of smoke seen in satellite imagery.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
